Celebrating Pride Month at Novuna: Rob’s story

At Novuna, we take pride in fostering an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to be their authentic selves. In this blog article, we hear from Rob Slade, who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community and actively participates in our PRISM colleague community. His story demonstrates the power and strength of embracing diversity within the workplace.

Meet Rob

Rob joined Novuna in 2022 and works in IT looking after applications that our colleagues use every day. Away from his day-to-day role, Rob is a part of our PRISM colleague network.

“One of my passions is colleague engagement and I always look for opportunities to host events, join clubs, and get people involved with new activities,” Rob told us.

The Importance of Community

Our PRISM community serves as a platform for LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies to come together, share experiences, and create a sense of belonging. Through this network, individuals can find support, build connections, and learn from each other's diverse perspectives. For Rob, a sense of community is important, to be able to challenge the status quo, but as he explains this hasn’t always been straightforward:

"Before my time at Novuna, I made what I consider to be a 'bad move' at one point in my career and ended up in an environment that I felt wasn't healthy. There were no community groups and limited diversity. I became quiet and distant and felt the need to behave differently to fit in. Staying in that role would have been detrimental to my health, and the sad reality is that many people face similar challenges every day.

“It's vital to have the PRISM community that celebrates differences, challenges unhealthy behaviours, and promotes inclusivity. I've made connections with people that I wouldn't normally meet across the business and always look forward to hearing our member's updates and sharing stories that others can relate to."

Authenticity and Empowerment

Individuals thrive when they can be their true selves, empowering colleagues to bring their unique perspectives, talents, and ideas to the table, a feeling Rob shared from his first interactions with the business.

"From the moment I interviewed with Novuna, I was confident that I could be myself. Every person that I interact with has a positive, open-minded attitude and brings a wealth of diversity. Everyone's individuality is celebrated here, and I have never felt the need to hold back a part of my personality. I love that every member of the Executive Committee aligns with and sponsors a community, which reinforces the values that Novuna holds."

Continuing the Journey

As we evolve, the need to understand and adapt to new practices and behaviours will allow us to continue striving in creating an inclusive workplace for all. Rob shared with us some of the future ambitions he has for us.

"I'm excited to see Novuna continuing to adopt inclusive language and policies in our offices. Recognising pronouns and using gender-neutral language has shown that our colleagues are heard and valued. “
